Compared to most Yeezys, the Powerphase Calabasas is incredibly affordable, priced at just $180 on the Adidas website. But the draws of this shoe are more than just the price tag. Made with a soft leather upper, these shoes are incredibly comfortable to wear and have a much more sophisticated silhouette than some of the more chunky Yeezy looks. They are also very lightweight, with a thin, practical sole and a slender fit. For such a simple shoe, the Powerphase Calabasas somehow manages to look and feel like a premium purchase. Though it’s a simple and slender silhouette, it doesn’t feel tight or confining on the foot. It doesn’t have any fancy highlights or mesh accents on the upper, but the simple leather with the Adidas stripes very lightly outlined on the sides gives it an elegance that, in some ways, is much more striking than the louder Yeezy models. The leather on the upper is soft and supple, which means that these shoes (unlike most leather uppers) don’t need to be broken in – they’re comfortable right away. They’re also incredibly pliable, which means you can run, jump, and work out in these shoes without causing the leather to crease. The most notable feature of this Yeezy release, of course, is the absence of the Boost technology. And yet, these shoes are still very comfortable to wear, with enough support that they’re good for a very intense workout, as they were originally designed to be a tennis shoe. Retro is definitely in fashion right now, but the understated design of the Powerphase Calabasas feels very contemporary, and in a good way. Rather than relying on the chunky soles and colorful mesh styling of classic 90s looks, this Yeezy shoe speaks to the streamlined and simple aesthetic that has dominated the 2010s, right down to it’s monochrome color scheme.
