Nike’s Dunk Low is one of its simplest silhouettes, and yet is also one of its most beloved. Released in hundreds of different colorways, there is no human on earth who can’t find a Dunk Low that fits their personal style or athletic needs. Dunk Lows have been released in men’s, women’s, children’s, and unisex styles, and continue to increase in performance, durability, and comfort with each new release.
Like most Nike shoes, the Dunk Low was originally intended to be marketed as a basketball shoe. However, as a low top with a thin sole, it’s actually enjoyed far more popularity as a skateboarding shoe. Older colorways of the Dunk Low were much plainer in terms of color scheme, usually featuring two primary colors and the Nike swoosh on the side. However, as the shoe become more and more popular with skaters, the colorways started to become more and more colorful. Some of the most popular colorways for this shoe have been collaborations with celebrity street artists, including the likes of Haze, Stash, and Futura.
The thin, flat soles of the Dunk Low lent themselves naturally to skateboarding, but the Nike technology often made them more comfortable for serious skaters than Vans or Converse. The cultural connection between skateboarding and street art was a match made in heaven for these shoes, and the rest, as they say, is history. Today, skateboarding culture isn’t nearly as popular as it was in the 90s and early 2000s, and so the Dunk Low, ironically, is making a bit of a comeback as a basketball shoe. The 2019 craze for vintage re-releases has revitalized many classic Nike looks, and the Dunk Low is no exception. One of the most coveted shoes in Nike history, the Dunk Low “Viotech” colorway, is set for a historic rerelease during the 2019 holiday season, and is expected to be one of the year’s biggest sellers.
